Take a look at these stats:
According to a national survey of 1,000 Americans (by Identity Theft Resource Center and Fellowes, Inc.), 81% of Americans are aware that identity theft can happen at any time and that 65% are using tools to protect themselves. Yet, despite this, Americans still do not feel secure. Because of consistent misconception about identity theft crimes and victims, around 50% of Americans feel vulnerable.
The biggest misconception? It is that Americans believe technology makes them more vulnerable to identity fraud. Around 40% of the survey respondents said identity theft is most likely to occur through online exchanges. However, in reality, online exchanges represent only 9% of the crime, whereas the majority of identity fraud occurs through paper documents and stolen information!
